Effulgence of the North

The Velaslavasay Panorama embodies several domains of visual phenomena: A Traditional 360-degree Panorama, Lobby & Ancillary Salon Exhibits and Gardens of the Illustrious Pacific Ring.

The Velaslavasay Panorama presents to the public Effulgence of the North - a 360-degree painted panorama that explores the limitless horizon beyond a frigid terrain, illuminated by the ethereal Aurora Borealis. The panorama includes an ongoing 35-minute cycle of subtly shifting light and sound, enhancing the immersive experience and drawing the visitor into a sublime illusory excursion to the mystical Frozen North.

A visit to our arctic panorama is complimented by a stroll through The Velaslavasay Garden and Grounds, featuring lush tropical plantings, a wide variety of succulents, a misting and meditation grotto, and a copper-roofed gazebo for reading and reflection. Reminiscent of the great 19th-century pleasure gardens, our Grounds provide welcome respite from the everyday cares of the world.

We also welcome you to visit the Nova Tuskhut, an Arctic Trading Post complete with a mini diorama of the tundra, polar artifacts including snowshoes from the Peary Expedition, and the flying goggles of an Arctic Bush-Pilot.

Opening reception: August 4, 6-10pm / Closing reception: August 27, 2-5pm
By appointment August 1 - August 31

Situated on the edge of commercial Hollywood and the residential splendor of Hancock Park, Bernardo Hale is an independently funded artist space and gallery. The show, ‘Artist & Residence’ curated by Jane Lee, represents the collective work of Carson Garhart, Michael Haight, and Seve Martinez, three artists balancing the demands of commercial art in order to afford their creative practice. Garhart, Haight and Martinez (two of which are residents) have displayed their works throughout the gallery’s two floors, offering a distinct curatorial overlap between residential and commercial. B|H offers art celebrated in relation to real walls, displayed in real ways.

Why Art Matters!

This exhibition is being staged in response to the potential threat to the funding of the National Endowment for the Arts. We have invited some of the leading Curators in SoCal to each select an artist/artists group that they feel reflect upon the projects title, Why Art Matters. These artists have shown, via their myriad practices, some of the engaged and often profound reasons that Art has been an essential ingredient to the building of civilizations throughout history. Culture is important and Art is a cornerstone of Culture. It mirrors our concerns and interests and it is the greatest example, alongside Science, of the curiosity that has helped Humanity get where it is, in its finest moments.

The Artists: Chaz Bojorquez, Beatriz Cortez with Rafa Esparza, Finishing School, Arshia Haq, Kenyatta AC Hinkle, Linda Pollack, Henry Taylor, Glen Wilson, Liat Yossifor

The Curators are: Dan Cameron, Emily Gonzalez-Jarrett, Kio Griffith, Nancy Meyer, Kristina Newhouse, Paul Schimmel, Max Presneill, Tyler Stallings, Catherine Taft
