*The exhibit opens on Aug 26 with the screening of Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival by Fabrizio Terranova at 8:00pm (doors open at 7:30pm). The gallery hours for the show are Aug 27-30, 12-6pm. There will also be another screening of the film on Thursday, August 30, at 8:00pm (doors opens at 7:30pm). More information and a performance schedule are available on the NAVEL website at www.navel.la

In her book Staying with the Trouble, Donna Haraway presents a liquid world view in which all actors, human and non-human, are equal and move in and out of each other in correlating influences.

Taking this proposition as starting point, Making Kin is an exhibition by the newly-formed NAVEL Collective, a group of artists, scientists, designers, writers, coders, and community organizers. It explores the ethics and meanings, forms and possibilities of kinship.

The exhibit opens on Sunday, August 26 with the LA premiere of the documentary Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival by Fabrizio Terranova. An encore screening will take place on Thursday, August 30.

NAVEL is located at 1611 S Hope Street. The direct entrance to our space is located through a large black gate on Venice Blvd. Follow the posted signs to the gate and enter through the first door on the left just past the gate.
If you're arriving via Lyft/Uber (which we highly recommend) then use 418 Venice blvd. as your destination and this will drop you off right in front of the black gate.
If you're arriving via Metro, the closest station is the Pico Station on the Blue & Expo Lines.
Self Parking is available in the parking lot directly underneath the I-10 freeway (if there is no attendant, do NOT use the lot directly connected to our building-you may be towed), cash only, payable to the United Valet Parking staff onsite or the payment box near the entrance. We recommend street parking (or Lyft/Uber/Public Transport!).
If you need access to the elevator, call us at (347) 218-2221 or (360) 334-0139.

Tyler Matthew Oyer / OOF BOOKS: Calling All Divas print launch + screening

  • 912A Cypress Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 90065 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

OOF Books hosts the launch of Tyler Matthew Oyer's CALLING ALL DIVAS print edition. An installation in the bookstore is accompanied by a reading and screening event on Friday, August 10.

The poems are reflections on / conversations with queer, femme, HIV+ radical inspiring individuals. This edition is made up of poems for Kembra Pfahler, Ron Athey, James Baldwin, Paul Thek, Grace Jones + Keith Haring, Jack Smith, Charles Ludlam, and David Wojnarowicz. These works dance with themes of legacy, inheritance, fandom, idol worship, archiving and tenderness.

The screening encompasses works that broaden the methods of these imaginings across artistic practices that engage "impossible" queer dialogues. Perhaps an impossible dialogue is always already queer? The program includes work by Martin Jacob Nielsen, Harold Offeh, Conrad Ventur and more.

The print edition was produced in collaboration with Los Angeles Contemporary Archive and exhibited at Vermilion Sands in Copenhagen.
