Cathy Immordino’s photography is intellectual. And emotional. It captures the multidimensional quality of human consciousness by recombining its parts into new wholes -- literally by engineering fresh composite photographs derived from an array of her own original images. She does this in order to tell stories which themselves weave across generations, genres, continents, and mediums. “I do not stop at the making of the photograph,” she says. “I go on to print these unified montages of layers and fragments and then to apply processes, like cyanotype, photogravure, and 3-D reductive printmaking, to augment and express their conceptual intent.” Immordino further enhances her stylized lexicon with the addition of hand-restored, lavishly embellished vintage frames, often with shaped and convex glass, which in turn evokes the same set of references to family, sociology, and the human condition which are being expressed within the kaleidoscopic images. Thus the form and content each express the same message, making her process and story all the more familiar in its appeal and resonance.

In a rare open studio event Lloyd opens her door to share works/performances that venture into the absurdities of socio-political, philosophical and psychoanalytical themes.

“The images I generate reflect both my quirky humor and love of language. The work has been described as “being drawn into a private joke that can only be appreciated by members of a secret society.” I prefer to liken what I do to an optical illusion, or well executed pun. The objective, either way, is to get you to look a second time.”

Come join Terri and her cohorts Pink Buddha, and Cucuy The Wonder Bird, for an afternoon of absurdity, Zen and Gonzo.

Jeremy J. Quinn & Michele Jaquis & Mark Ericson

  • 455 Jung Jing Road Los Angeles, CA, 90012 United States (map)

Jeremy J Quinn, Michele Jaquis and Mark Ericson open their Chinatown art and design studio to the public.

Jeremy J. Quinn is a multidisciplinary artist and architect based in Chinatown, Los Angeles. He runs his own architectural office, JJQAD, and creates artwork across diverse media, often combining sculpture, video and sound into installations. His works have explored representation of landscape, spatial interaction with sound, conditions of communication between people, and the interrogation of urban conditions and architectural space.

Michele Jaquis is an interdisciplinary artist and educator who combines strategies of conceptual art, documentary and social practice to examine the complexities within personal and social relationships, identity, language and communication, resulting in a range of image-based, object-based, time-based and engagement-based projects.

Mark Ericson’s research is centered on the potential for seemingly defunct techniques of drawing to interrogate digital tools. In particular, he reconstructed the stereotomic drawings contained in Guarino Guarini’s Architettura civile (1737) and produced a manual that breaks down the process into a set of legible steps and principles. Mark is currently working on translating the techniques of Guarino Guarini into automated processes that can incorporate time and variation into the principles contained within his original drawings.

Our studio is located on Jung Jing Road, a pedestrian street between Broadway and Hill, near the Bruce Lee Statue in Chinatown. Look for the JJQAD sign next to our door.

Jackie Farkas, Giovanna Pizzoferrato, & TK Kuk

  • 1950 South Santa Fe Avenue #202 Los Angeles, CA, 90021 United States (map)

“She Paints” is a trio of painters: Giovanna Pizzoferrato, Jackie Farkas, & TK Kuk. These artists share a workspace in Downtown L.A. On August 18th,  they invite the public to their Open Studios reception. Each artist works in a distinct way through the medium of painting.

Giovanna Pizzoferrato’s paintings and drawings investigate touch and connections. She studies physical objects in search of some understanding of attachments, both mechanical and sentimental.

Jackie works in a raw, gestural mode of abstract painting. Working in the style of many male painters from the mid-century, she reclaims a machismo mode of painting in an attempt to rewrite history.

As a first-generation Korean American, TK Kuk seeks to restore cultural gender imbalances through portraiture.  Her subjects are defined in a new set of terms that were once only reserved for and by the patriarchy.

There is parking available in South Lot off of 15th Street. Enter the building on Santa Fe Street door or North parking lot entry. Studio #202 is upstairs, signs will be posted to help show you the way.

Competing Desires explores the contradictions in representations of motherhood, fertility, and desire, through the influence of photographic culture.
The identity of motherhood comes with baggage. Throughout art history we rarely see women by themselves, unless they are imaged as sexual objects. Mostly women are shown with children in the context of motherhood or care. This series challenges patriarchal norms by separating out the way cultural expectations burden and betray personal desire, intuition, and need.
The sculptures are made with found and original photographs, in addition to material waste and household objects. Connecting these elements I seek to identify and make sense of the influence of our culture’s powerful external expectations of women, particularly around motherhood, as well as my own.

My studio is located in the garage behind the duplex. Walk down the driveway to enter garage.

Sierra Pecheur has always loved bones, hearts, and the sea so it's fitting that the LA artist has created a collection of ceramic wall sculptures in the form of the human heart. But these hearts are not Hallmark Valentines. They are, however, valentines of a sort, a love letter to the planet and its rescue.

"In her hands, clay is skillfully manipulated to resemble melting wax, pitted, scarified, rotting, scaley, punctured, sloughing off or petrified flesh. Uncanny approximations of actual organs result from polychromed glazing and direct painting that mimic dried blood, colorful molds and oxidations while markings and gashes impart a level of realism."

At times the surfaces glow with iridescence, begging to be touched. The Tidal Hearts are embedded with trash collected every day at the ocean's edge – dinosaurs, crack vials, tiparillo cigar tips, knives, broken bottles, plastic toys, fishing tackle, and straws, as well as, bird sculls that are found at an alarming rate.

We will have free designated off street parking in our lot. There is also ample free street parking too.

Christina Villamor "MIA in LA"

Christina Villamor "MIA in LA"

Taking varied inspiration from Quinceañeras, Hurricane Andrew, and Santeria, this body of work is inspired by growing up in Miami in the 1980s & 90s.  My work exaggerates and fictionalizes the city's past culture.  As the first expected city to cause massive displacement due to climate change, I also imagine a Miami in the science fiction-inspired future:  as relics and fossils. Facing its own climate change-induced challenges, presenting this project in Los Angeles, I imagine a dialogue between both coastal cities.

Directions from the 10:
-Take Santa Fe exit and head South on Santa Fe
-Continue on Santa Fe over the bridge at 15th street
-Make a your first right after the bridge onto 25th
-The Entrance is on 25th a block down on the right
-Follow signs for SFAC/Suns for parking
-Look for the 2415 building on the right.
-Suite 3
