Textile Artist Aneesa Shami Partners with Helms Bakery to Host Open Studio + Workshops

  • Helms Bakery 8745 Washington Boulevard, Studio B Culver City, CA, 90232 United States (map)

Aneesa Shami visits Helms with a pop up temporary studio for six weeks to continue working on pieces in her "Syndication" series. Aneesa will also be offering a suite of 3 workshops during her residency at the Helms Design Center, two of which take place during the month of August.

These workshops will highlight weaving, knitting, and quilting as three major facets of textile and fiber techniques. Each session will dive into a brief, introductory history of each technique, followed by hands-on instruction and experimentation. Participants are encouraged to play, make, learn, and connect with fiber materials and techniques in new ways.

Methodical Weaving: Introduction begins with ancient weaving and textiles, moving into 16th - 20th century textiles and how the Industrial Revolution impacted the advancement of looms and weaving, which in turn assisted technological growth in the U.S. The hands-on portion of the workshop will include all materials to create a small weaving.

Knitting As Protest: Introduction will begin with a brief history of knitting and its relation to weaving’s history, with focus on how knitting has evolved in modern and contemporary society. The hands-on workshop will include needles and yarn for participants to create a classic garter-stitch scarf.

Aneesa Shami's Artist-in-Residence Studio is located inside the Helms Design Center between the Vitra and Louis Poulsen showrooms. Free Parking is available in any Helms Bakery lot.
