ELEVATOR MONDAYS is an artist-run curatorial project inside a converted freight elevator founded by Don Edler. The project focuses on bringing together working artists in a social exhibition space to foster dialogue and community through exhibitions and special programing. ELEVATOR MONDAYS is open Mondays from 7PM-10PM and by appointment.

**When arriving at 1026 Venice Blvd, enter through the long narrow alleyway to the east side of the building, the gallery entrance and parking is in the back.**

Artist & Residence

Closing Reception

Situated on the edge of commercial Hollywood and the residential splendor of Hancock Park, Bernardo Hale is an independently funded artist space and gallery.

The show, ‘Artist & Residence’ curated by Jane Lee, represents the collective work of Carson Garhart, Michael Haight, and Seve Martinez, three artists balancing the demands of commercial art in order to afford their creative practice. Garhart, Haight and Martinez (two of which are residents) have displayed their works throughout the gallery’s two floors, offering a distinct curatorial overlap between residential and commercial. B|H offers art celebrated in relation to real walls, displayed in real ways.

CURL GANG GALLERY // Pop Up

Because Black, hair, and beautiful belong in the same conversation. The CURL GANG GALLERY Pop Up show will explore negative perceptions of textured hair and internalized racism, while celebrating Black and Brown female empowerment. Surrounding the viewer with bold imagery of curly or textured-haired women, CURL GANG GALLERY hopes to provoke inward thought and outward discussion in an effort to shatter Euro-colonial beauty standards.

Various works - from a range of mediums - of female artists of color will transform a quaint pocket garden into a contemporary outdoor art gallery.

SPACIAL/RECOGNITION

Opening Reception

Finishing Concepts is proud to present SPACIAL/RECOGNITION, the inaugural exhibit in the gallery space at their workshop. We invite the community to come experience the newly renovated space. The opening reception will be held on August 26th beginning at 1pm and is free to the public. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION was collectively curated by Julian Lombardi, Stephanie Sherwood and Surge Wintron.

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”
-Winston Churchill

For the first exhibit in the new gallery space at Finishing Concepts in Monterey Park, each artwork directly responds to the architecture. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION focuses on the exploration of non-traditional spaces. Each piece addresses this concept in an exploratory fashion, whether it is by challenging the traditional constraints of the rectangle, inhabiting three-dimensional space, or presenting the exploration of inner space in a profound manner. Many artists have expressed how changes to their studio space can directly affect the outcome of their work, sometimes architecture can direct us in unseen ways. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION contains pieces which touch and play with the space around them; they cut; they mimic; they assert.

Wares: Ceramics Traditions in Contemporary Practice features artists who use ceramics as a contemporary media by embracing its utilitarian tradition as the basis for its contemporary relevance. The vessels, boxes, and figurines in the show are unburdened by their functionality. They are often impractical, or do not function as the commonly used items they represent. The end product is then the result of a ceramic practice that seeks to address the techniques and traditions of the material, rather than make a usable object.

These artists represent a spectrum of artistic disciplines with diverse vantage points shaped by their landscape, terrain, culture and identity. In experiencing their work we come to understand personal accounts of survival and regeneration in the human habitable range.
