Autopsicografia

Autopsicografia* (Portuguese) is a performance/installation piece by artist Amanda Maciel Antunes, telling the story of adapting to a new language and thought. Thinking is a language that doesn’t make the distinction of a matter of course and in this narrative the artist explores these allegedly distinct parts of nature with doubts in its incision. During its course the artist concedes, interferes and changes her reality by meddling with her seemingly instinctive area of perception and culture camouflage; gradually speaking to an audience (physical or in a cloud) that her boundaries on a spectrum are universal constants of the human race.

SPACIAL/RECOGNITION

Opening Reception

Finishing Concepts is proud to present SPACIAL/RECOGNITION, the inaugural exhibit in the gallery space at their workshop. We invite the community to come experience the newly renovated space. The opening reception will be held on August 26th beginning at 1pm and is free to the public. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION was collectively curated by Julian Lombardi, Stephanie Sherwood and Surge Wintron.

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”
-Winston Churchill

For the first exhibit in the new gallery space at Finishing Concepts in Monterey Park, each artwork directly responds to the architecture. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION focuses on the exploration of non-traditional spaces. Each piece addresses this concept in an exploratory fashion, whether it is by challenging the traditional constraints of the rectangle, inhabiting three-dimensional space, or presenting the exploration of inner space in a profound manner. Many artists have expressed how changes to their studio space can directly affect the outcome of their work, sometimes architecture can direct us in unseen ways. SPACIAL/RECOGNITION contains pieces which touch and play with the space around them; they cut; they mimic; they assert.

homeLA // Larchmont: The Way Light Moves Through

Saturday August 26, 2017 4-7pm with timed ticket entry at 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm

We are thrilled to invite you to join us for homeLA's 18th performance event this summer at the home of Alexandra Mathews and Sam Mantell on Saturday August 26, 2017. Seven artists along with their collaborators have been working to create new site-specific performances and interactive installations in and around this sunny apartment complex near the Larchmont neighborhood. "The Way Light Moves Through" not only describes the visual quality of the home - the way light pours through windows, peeks through walls, and changes so subtly during an afternoon - but also points to the ways in which artists have been responding to the site during warm summer days of physical and conceptual explorations.

homeLA // Larchmont: The Way Light Moves Through will be a durational performance where audiences can roam freely. There will be new works from Zena Bibler, Jay Carlon, Emily Marchand, J. Alex Mathews, NoodleRice & Friends, Cindy Rehm with Elizabeth Leister, and Selwa Sweidan.

*Exact location will be revealed upon ticket purchase.*

homeLA provides a platform to independent dance, body-based, sound, and intermedia artists at various stages of their careers to develop new works and one-of-a-kind performances in response to the architecture and ethos of Los Angeles homes.

homeLA is fiscally sponsored by the Pasadena Arts Council's EMERGE program.

Wares: Ceramics Traditions in Contemporary Practice features artists who use ceramics as a contemporary media by embracing its utilitarian tradition as the basis for its contemporary relevance. The vessels, boxes, and figurines in the show are unburdened by their functionality. They are often impractical, or do not function as the commonly used items they represent. The end product is then the result of a ceramic practice that seeks to address the techniques and traditions of the material, rather than make a usable object.

The Rad, Bad, and Sad Show

The Rad, Bad, and Sad Show Live in Torrance Art Museum!

A show about architecture in Los Angeles: After enduring years of car captive commutes through the endless sprawls of Los Angeles, Adam and Ben collect their road spun whimsy to discuss the unsung heroes, haters & heartaches of the architecture they encounter. Rating each masterpiece as Rad, Bad, or Sad; putting an end to the typical endless architectural discussion and deciding once and for all, what these buildings really are.

A Bright and Guilty Place

Orson Welles described Los Angeles as "a bright and guilty place," which is also a fitting context for Virginia Broersma's recent work. Broersma is an artist and sometimes curator whose paintings focus on the representation of the human form in moments of hyperawareness of one's own body. Come visit her studio to see recent work and have a drink with the artist.

Wares: Ceramics Traditions in Contemporary Practice

Emma Echenique

Wares: Ceramics Traditions in Contemporary Practice features artists who use ceramics as a contemporary media by embracing its utilitarian tradition as the basis for its contemporary relevance. The vessels, boxes, and figurines in the show are unburdened by their functionality. They are often impractical, or do not function as the commonly used items they represent. The end product is then the result of a ceramic practice that seeks to address the techniques and traditions of the material, rather than make a usable object.

Curated by Javier Proenza

Opening reception: Saturday 8/5/17, 6:00-9:00 PM

Gallery hours: 1:00-5:00 PM Saturday & Sunday, by appointment Monday-Friday

Extro/Introspection

The work deconstructs the idea of performance through an immersive event that will blur the boundaries between the audience and the performer. Via a GoPro that the performer will wear, the audience will be directly implicated in the spectacle. The GoPro footage then will be juxtaposed with the video of the performer that will be live-streamed and projected within a fixed environment. However the performer will be free to perform independent of the confines of the location of the projection. In this way the dancer becomes a conduit of engagement instead of being the subject of entertainment.

Los Angeles River Plushie Workshop

Join artist Billy Kheel for a workshop inspired by the L.A. River. Using a catalog based on things found during L.A. River cleanups, Kheel will bring templates for creating different animals and materials that have been found in the river. These objects and creatures tell the story of the L.A. River and of Los Angeles itself. Creating these river artifacts in felt offers a way to contemplate the river, its past and its future, without actually immersing oneself in the muck and grime of the river itself.

$20 fee for materials. Kids are totally welcome!

Funambulism Workshop with Jamie Hamilton

Do you want to explore walking on a tight rope? Here’s your opportunity! We will play on the rope, working on the basics of balancing, perhaps reframing our personal narrative of what is possible.

Jamie Hamilton is a sculptor, builder, and aerialist who trained himself in the art of wire walking over four years while building Amor Fati, a large installation of handmade trusses, nets, and wire ropes. He also creates constructivist sculptures which are musings on machine technology as extension of the body, expressing human desire and intellect along with its limitations.

Tours of the Arroyo: Flowing Water, Fruitful Valley

Flowing Water, Fruitful Valley is a documentary film about the Arroyo Seco, a tributary to the Los Angeles River, following the path of the river from the mountains north of Pasadena into the Lower Arroyo, Highland Park and Lincoln Heights, and finally to the confluence with the Los Angeles River. The film follows several walking tours of the area and connects with a range of people out in the area for recreation. One of the questions the film explores is how people with differing interests interact and share limited space and resources. 80 minutes.
